THE HYPERBOLE. EXPLAINED.

BREATHABILITY

Breathability is the ability of a fabric to allow moisture vapour to pass through it. It is an essential contributing property to thermoregulation of the body. A fabric or garment that does not let air through will lead to the garment becoming saturated by sweat, and a vicious cycle of inter-garment and body temperature increase. A wet garment can also significantly decrease perception of comfort.

MOISTURE MANAGEMENT/WICKING

The drawing off of liquid from the skin, through the fabric to the external environment by means of a capillary or piping action. The moisture from sweat, rain or rain is drawn away from your body by the weave or construction of the fabric. This results in no inner moisture which can make you wet, and reduce or increase your body temperature unhelpfully. Moisture Management of all of Black Sheep’s fabrics is tested using the Sweating Hot Plate test.

THERMOREGULATION

Thermoregulation is not so much feature, but rather an end goal that is affected by breathability and moisture management, amongst others. The goal of thermoregulation is to maintain the body’s optimum temperature range (37 degrees C). Poor breathability or moisture management, according to weather it’s cold or hot, can act against achieving thermoregulation

ABRASION RESISTANCE / DURABILITY

Abrasion occurs during all aspects of a fabrics life-cycle: during manufacture, use, and during cleaning. Abrasion resistance is lab tested on all of Black Sheep’s fabrics using what’s known as the Martindale Test.

WATER RESISTANCE

The resistance of a fabric against water permeating the outer surface. A fabric composition, structure, and coating can all affect its water resistance. We test the fabrics we promote as having high levels of water resistance using the Spray Rating.

SUSTAINABILITY

In order to reduce the volume and impact of landfill waste, a new generation of biodegradable fabrics are being produced that will break down following disposal. The goal of sustainability is also being seen by including more natural fibres, such as merino and cotton, in polyester and nylon blends.

UV PROTECTION

Refers to a fibre or fabric ability to resist UV radiation. The properties of a fabric structure that greatly influence its UV are weight, density, weave or knit structure, stretch, wetness and colour. The heavier the weight, the higher the density, the tighter the structure, the drier the fabric and the darker the colour will all lead to more UV protection. However, it is a balance and our job is to get the highest UV protection possible without compromising performance.

THE MATERIALS

The selection of individual fabrics and trims is what sets Black Sheep Cycling apart.

LIGHT ASTEROID

(aka. MITI Asteria). Our base fabric from Italy that is used throughout the jersey. One of the lightest warp knit fabrics available that still keep you covered, combined with superior breathability and perspiration management.

POWER CUFF

(aka. MITI Powerband), The Power Cuff provides a specific amount of compression around the thigh to maintain fit and performance.

OPENCELL MESH

(Mesh). Strategically used in the side panels of the jersey. Provides even more ventilation and comfort

BS HIGH DENSITY FOAM PAD WITH PERONEAL SUPPORT

Probably the most important part of any kit. Our pad is the epitome of comfort and performance. A high density foam construction (90kg) with perforation channels ensures a comfortable ride of 5 hours or more, in the hottest or coldest conditions. We have also added Peroneal Support for those riders spending time down in the drops or on the bars.

CORE POWER

(aka. MITI Shield Endurance). Italian made fabric used in the bib that has been chosen for it’s supreme abrasion resistance. For those wanting to geek out, we have recorded over 50, 000 cycles on Martindale.

REFLECTIVE POCKET TRIM

It’s minimal. It’s discrete. And it keeps you visible and safe.
